Abstract

One of the over-arching goals of ecology is to understand how abiotic and biotic environmental factors influence the performance (evolutionary fitness), distribution and abundance of organisms in nature. This article gives an historical overview of research aimed at understanding the ecological role of solar ultraviolet radiation in the life (and death) of terrestrial plants.
